Such advocacy stems from discomfort at the prospect of the indictment of hte present from a war crime scene, to which nascent capitalism owes its origins. Serra's own words from his "Escrituras," financial accounting, and memos to the Bishops are dispositive. Serra was the Prelado Territorial, (the administrative power of a Bishop) of California's Missions, charged with moving Indians off "rancherías" or hamlets into Missions to be laborers. Here are excerpts from Serra's own words (my translation):<br /><br />11, April, 1763: "They started to preach regarding heaven and earth to those miserable gentiles, insensitive children, were baptized in the sea." "Escrituras de Junipero Serra" (hereinafter "Escrituras" p. 358.<br /><br />On or about September 8, 1771 and continuing, Mission San Gabriel of the Earthquakes: "...it's beginnings portended greatness...but said consolation did not last beyond the Offical Fages taking dominion over that young plant, when within 8 days took him no more effort than ordering the soldiers to establish the mission, no matter the result. "Escrituras" p. 358.<br /><br />"A few day laters, as he [the Corporal] went out to gather the of cattle...or as seems... more likely to secure for himself a woman; a soldier along with some other, killed the principal chief of the gentiles; they cut off his head and brought it in triumph to the mission, in the presence of the small son of said chief... Using the troubles there as a prext, more soldiers than are necessary were planned...But the misfortunes of that poor mission did not stop there. That crowd of lazy soldiers (together with one or more mule drivers exceeded 20 men) refused to do any work; bored and unhappy with the stories of the preceding officer in San Diego, for the pacification of which the clergy had worked especially Father Antonio Paterna (although the Governor reported just the opposite to Your Excellency) in disagreement, as was frequently the case...turned their swords on each other...commanded by a useless Corporal... who was given to insolence, the outbursts of which caused the gentiles to distance themselves more and more from the mission, their escape being futile to free themselves from his iniquities... "Escrituras," p. 361-362<br /><br />"Six of them [the soldiers] tended set out on horseback in the morning with or without permission from the Corporal; they went to the hamlets many leagues in away and men and women upon seeing them immediately ran. They [the soldiers] took advantage (according according to repeated declarations from the priests and complaints from the gentiles) of their skill at capturing a cow or mule with their lassos, and thus lassoed the Indian women, to satiate their reckless lust; and when the male Indians tried to defend the women, killed several of them with gunfire... "Escrituras," p. 362<br /><br />"...upon seeing such disorder, and who with his own eyes saw a soldier indecently groping a male Indian...the Senior Priest...became sad...and upon advice from the others returned to San Diego." "Escrituras," p. 362<br /><br />"Among the three [Priests] one tried incessantly to remedy so many wrongs, be it from the altar preaching, and with specific warnings, with recourse to the Corporal, whose response tended to be: 'If the gentiles say that, let them prove it'; the matter never went beyond that." Id. p. 362<br /><br />These are some of the archival artifacts cited as sources in "Indians, Franciscans, and Spanish Colonization:The Impact of the Mission System on California Indians." I was reminded that saints are people, and all human beings make mistakes. Recognizing someone as a saint does not say the Catholic Church feels that that person was perfect, but rather that he/she strove to be as good a Christian as he/she could be. I think it clear that Franciscan priest Serra did that. Sainthood is declared not to help the person honored to heaven, but as a model to other imperfect humans to strive to do the right things in life.John Dalyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05363204598363726098noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009239175020341445.post-75019733395012432352015-09-17T00:35:15.495-04:002015-09-17T00:35:15.495-04:00Map of Mexico, 1810 at the start of its war of ind...<a href="https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/12038403_10152930244416377_1131594618321177384_n.jpg?oh=d9ad195b3cd9eee63bba1d13cf98a2e5&oe=5660BD8E" rel="nofollow">Map of Mexico, 1810 at the start of its war of independece</a>John Dalyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05363204598363726098noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009239175020341445.post-22805649571287311442015-09-13T19:14:52.921-04:002015-09-13T19:14:52.921-04:00Two more on Junipero Serra:

The state’s most recent official forecast estimates that Hispanics will account for 49% of the population in 2060, much lower than an earlier projection, to 2050, had suggested. Pew gives several reasons for this, including declining Hispanic birth rates and slowing immigration. But although Latinos may fall shy of a majority, their continued growth will be remarkable, increasing by 2.2m in Los Angeles County (and 1.1m in Riverside), while the number of whites in LA will fall by a third. It is believed that the Virgin appeared to an Indian at that time. Since then it has been a matter of faith for Catholics, especially in the territory that was once New Spain (which includes the modern state of California) that baptized Indians became full members of the Catholic Church, of what is termed the Body of Christ. Junipero Serra, like other missionaries working after the early 16th century would have had their efforts informed by this understanding (says the article). Thus, Serra may be considered to have seen the baptized Indians in a way quite different than the Anglos of North America. He should have seen baptized Indians as simply members of the church, comparable to Spaniards.John Dalyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05363204598363726098noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009239175020341445.post-41629624455382232572015-06-09T21:50:27.055-04:002015-06-09T21:50:27.055-04:00It is ironic and profoundly biased, how many choos...It is ironic and profoundly biased, how many choose to ignore the abundant realities of slavery and sickness long before Columbus and the Catholic Church came to the Americas. If you want a more accurate history of the relationship between Native Peoples and our Genocide at the hands of Serra's Inquisition policies under the Papal Bulls, read "A Cross of Thorns" by Elias Castillo, Pulitzer nominated journalist. Native Peoples are the moral authorities of our history which includes genocide. When you speak of disease brought by the Europeans, many of our peoples died of syphilis, because the Native women were raped by Serra's Soldiers. Under no circumstances was Serra an evangelist or "Father of California". The canonization of Junipero Serra is an act of Hostility towards Native Peoples by Pope Francis. We have addressed the UN, interviewed with BBC, Al-Jazeera and multiple news sources.
